Understanding Trauma-Informed Care in Applied Behavior Analysis

(Based on Austin, Rajaraman, & Beaulieu, 2024)

What is Trauma-Informed Care (TIC)?

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is an approach that acknowledges the prevalence and impact of trauma, ensuring that services are provided in a way that promotes safety, trust, and empowerment. In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), TIC involves designing interventions that consider an individual’s past experiences and minimize the risk of retraumatization.

Why Should We Care About TIC?

Research shows that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence, significantly increase the risk of learning and behavioral challenges. Individuals with four or more ACEs are:

  • 32 times more likely to have behavior problems
  • 12 times more likely to attempt suicide
  • At greater risk for self-injury and aggression

Children with autism and other developmental disabilities are especially vulnerable to trauma, making it essential for ABA professionals to integrate TIC principles into their practice.

How to Practice Trauma-Informed Care in ABA

  1. Promote Safety & Trust – Ensure a supportive environment that avoids unnecessary distress and allows clients to feel secure.
  2. Empower Choice & Collaboration – Offer clients choices in their interventions and involve families in decision-making.
  3. Recognize Trauma’s Impact – Understand that past experiences may shape present behaviors and emotional responses.
  4. Focus on Skill Building Over Compliance – Shift from control-based interventions to teaching meaningful skills that promote independence.
  5. Avoid Potentially Retraumatizing Strategies – Be mindful of how certain techniques, such as extinction, may be perceived as distressing and modify approaches accordingly.

Conclusion

Trauma-informed ABA ensures that therapy is not only effective but also compassionate. By adopting TIC, we can create more inclusive, ethical, and supportive practices that respect the unique needs of each individual.
